Caring for Your Handbags

As with any other thing, handbags need dedicated care too – especially the leather ones. For one they are expensive, but also very durable with a little care. Leather bags almost always come with care instructions but here are some generic tips:

• The care needs to start right at the point of purchase – ensure to ask about the kind of leather because the kind of care depends on that. Goes without saying that the guidelines given need to be adhered to.
• Leather of any kind must not be stored inside any cover that doesn’t allow for air circulation, such as plastic. This ups the risk of fungi development. Pillow covers are one good option to store leather in.
• Leather must not be exposed to direct sunlight, which apparently causes the color to fade.
• There are leather conditioners available, that must be occasionally used so that the shine is intact. This also lends some strength to the material. Waterproofing products are also available, given the importance of keeping water away that could leave moisture stains.
• Leather conditioning must be preceded by cleaning it with a solution to remove surface dirt. For cleaning and conditioning take a soft, microfiber cloth as it is gentle on the leather surface. These products are easily available in general bag shops, car accessories shop or online on www.ebay.com or www.ebay.in . Remember, that the products to be used also vary according to leather type.

My Leather

• Bags in general, not just leather, must be stuffed with newspaper/tissue to help them retain their shape and also prevent them from collapsing at the sides, which could cause the material to tear at the folds. There is another school of thought that suggests using bubble wraps to fill in the bags as newspaper ink could rub on to the bag fabric.
