World renowned auction house Christie’s has put up Margaret Thatcher’s belongings including her iconic bags for auction, two years after her demise.
The iron lady’s bags hold a place of prominence in the history of fashion as they were an integral part of the ‘power dressing’ concept she popularized during her time. In addition, her handbag carried prominent official documents that were produced at opportune times to ruthlessly mow down her opponents. Over time her handbag emerged as a dreaded piece of accessory, going much beyond the intended purpose of storage. So much so that the term ‘handbagging’ was coined to describe such intimidating behavior and has ever since entered the Oxford Dictionary.
I believe knowing these little stories helps one appreciate what went into building such larger-than-life personalities and brands. It adds to the whole enigma and experience. Hope you enjoy it as well!
Margaret Thatcher carried austere looking bags by Launer, Asprey and Fendi, appropriate for her high office. A Launer and a Fendi bag she carried are part of this sale. Apart from her bags, there are several more of her personal items on sale such as her wedding outfit, a cashmere coat and raincoat. The auction starts 15th of December, the prices from £200 and if you can afford it, there would be no better way to own a piece of iconic history!
