Offbeat Totes/Clutches from Fancy Chilli

Printed Totes

Under the Mango Tree nestles Fancy Chilli. Before you conjure up a scene from one of Enid Blyton’s books, let me tell you that ‘Under the Mango Tree’ is the name of a location in Richmond Road, Bangalore. And one of the stores in this building is that of Fancy Chilli. But the experience is no less than that of a fairy tale episode! Every nook and corner beckons you with some novelty on display. There are surprises galore and never a dull moment. For starters, they have a radio in the form of an old gramophone record player and this wrought-iron rickshaw which costs just INR 600.

Their wares are aptly named ‘chillies’ for the liberal dose of quirkiness in them which are also offbeat, or ‘fancy’. In their own words:

“Our Chillies – That’s how we call our products!

The name ‘FancyChilli’ is inspired by the spiced up world of CHILLIS which are characterized by their stimulating & dominant taste, Promising consistency, captivating Aroma, glamorous color & appetizing bite which leaves a divine & completely satisfying after-taste.
We at Fancychilli aim at combining all these attributes and bring to you a whole new offering of quirky and off beat goodies with a hint of kitsch.”

Ekta Jain, founder of Fancy Chilli, was gracious enough to let me cover their most interesting bags. This post is slightly delayed, thanks to the vagaries of a full-time day job! Nevertheless, to continue – though you’d find all sorts of bags at Fancy Chilli, I find their totes and slings to be a cut above the rest. Whether the prints or the embroidery, they are superbly done. The colors are vibrant and full of life. Cost wise too, you’d find something to suit every budget. I’d once bought a cane clutch for INR 350, from their store in HSR Layout. They are open all days from 11AM to 8:30PM. They were at Kitsch Mandi, Bangalore, this last weekend but unfortunately I couldn’t be there. Their lovely collection follows…

Vidya Gupta

Mother to three lovely boys and wife of a banking professional, I am extremely passionate about a host of topics, bags being one of them. For the record, the others are - makeup, travel, photography, in no particular order. Here I share my perspective on the Indian as well as the international bag-scene. As a youngster I would spend most of my money on bags and carry one according to my outfit. It is this love that I express through this blog. Needless to say, any suggestions for improvement, even healthy criticisms, are highly encouraged. Hope you enjoy your stay here and find something useful to help you on your next bag purchase!
