Most men, especially in the Indian subcontinent, would cringe at the thought of men’s purses. They have never carried anything beyond a briefcase, a backpack, a wallet or a duffel bag. At the worst, they have only held their wife’s/girlfriend’s handbag, while the ladies shopped.
But latest statistics reveal that that’s about to change. According to NPD, a leading market research firm, there has been a 3% rise in men’s handbag sales this year. More interestingly, the sales are higher in Asia than its Western counterparts. To define a men’s purse, it is a bag that has two top handles, just long enough to hold but not actually meant to wear over the shoulder like women do, and with an optional shoulder strap. Take a look at the launches this year of leading handbag brands; there has been plenty of provision made for male bags.

This trend is yet to kick off in India; till then, it’s only backpacks, briefcases, wallets and duffel bags. Though Hidesign offers messengers bags, we are yet to see the typical male purse in the Indian market. Would you men out there like to try out any of these?
